Experience

I am a recent graduate of Tufts University with a B.A. in biology offering at home and online tutoring services in biology, mathematics, physics, English literature and composition, Latin, and music as well as test prep including SAT, ACT, AP, ISEE, and GRE exams. I have studied biology, math, and English for more than ten years, music for eight years, and Latin for six years. I have performed very well on various standardized tests throughout my academic career including AP, SAT, SAT II, ACT, and GRE exams, and I know how to effectively and efficiently prepare students for successful test-taking. I have worked part time as a private tutor in these areas since June of 2013. Starting at the beginning of 2014, I have also worked full time as a cell culture technician at a small San Diego Biotech company specializing in isolation of primary mammalian cells. I'm passionate about making education more accessible to students by tailoring the presentation of subject matter to their individual needs. I work with each of my students to quickly identify specific areas of difficulty by looking at past graded materials, asking questions about his or her problem solving strategies, observing his or her performance during tutoring sessions, and sometimes administering a short evaluation quiz containing questions similar to those they may see on in-class exams or standardized tests. Once I am familiar with a student's strengths and weaknesses, I break down difficult topics into simplified, fundamental concepts and present these ideas in a way that complements his or her learning style. I then work through practice problem sets or writing assignments with my student, continually reevaluating his or her progress and changing needs. I have one year of experience volunteering as a writing tutor on the Student Writing Assistance Team (SWAT) at The Bishop's School Writing Center in La Jolla, CA. As a member of this team, I provided one-on-one tutoring and editing assistance for middle school and high school students at The Bishop's School that were struggling with writing assignments across a wide range of subjects. I have also worked as a music teacher giving private lessons to students in San Diego. About Me: I grew up in San Diego, attending Diegueño Country School in Rancho Santa Fe and The Bishop's School in La Jolla before moving to Boston, MA to pursue a dual degree in environmental science and music at Tufts University. During my second year there, I decided to refocus my studies on biology. I spent my third year as an undergraduate at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, studying chemistry, microbiology, vertebrate biology, and French language. I am very flexible with tutoring schedules, and I will cater to the specific needs of my students. If I can give you any further information about my skills and qualifications or about myself, including my test scores, grades, or courses that I have completed, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.
